Types of Acne
Usually blocked follicles are the primary source of acne formation, the breakouts however can manifest in several different ways which leads to different types of acne.
- Blackheads: Blackheads develop when the follicle is has become clogged, but isn’t blocked off from the surface. The edges of the follicle expand, causing the pore to appear larger. Blackheads are a mild form of acne and usually appear on the face but are also common on the back, chest, neck, arms and shoulders.
- Whiteheads: This type of acne is very common and affect both teens and young adults. Whiteheads are formed when the follicle becomes closed off at the surface of the skin. This blockage causes the sebum, dead cells and bacteria to build up inside of the pore which results in white coloration.
- Pustules: This type of acne is a more advanced infection within the follicle. The build up of dead cells and bacteria typically results in a pimple that can be painful and swollen.
- Cystic Acne: Cystic acne is the most severe and the hardest type of acne to treat because it is too deep for most topical medication. In the case of cystic acne, the sebum and puss begin to build up inside the skin. Rather then breaking through the surface this acne continues to grow deep into the skin.
