What is the difference between Botox  and Fillers?

Understanding the difference between Botox/Dysport and dermal fillers will help the aesthetic patient determine what procedure or procedures would be the best fit to help them achieve their cosmetic goals.  Botox/Dysport and dermal fillers are complementary aesthetic products which significantly enhances a patient’s appearance.  Both Botox/Dysport and Dermal Filler have a multitude of applications; so let’s begin to understand the key differences to help you choose which would be the best treatment for you!

What is Botox?

Botox and Dysport are both neuromodulators which means they block the nerve impulse which stimulates the movement of the muscle. Essentially, this means that they prevent you from using targeted muscles which prevents the formation of lines or wrinkles in the skin.  Once you stop using these target muscles, you skin will have time to heal and some fine lines and wrinkles will disappear.  Botox/Dysport will not erase your wrinkles overnight, but with consistent neurotoxin treatments your skin will heal over time and lines will start to look softer and less noticeable.  Botox and Dysport treatments take from 7 to 14 days to reach their peak strength and typically last 12 to 16 weeks.  Most patients will rebook their next neurotoxin treatment between 12 and 16 weeks.  If more units are used per session, it has been shown to last longer.

What is dermal filler?

Dermal Fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and are a gel like substance that mimics’ the consistency of fat.  As we know, fat and bone loss as we age contributes significantly to sagging skin and aging.  Fillers are used in areas of the face that have lost volume or to add structure and volume to areas that may be deficient.  Fillers can bring more facial symmetry to the face and the outcome of filler can be seen immediately.  There is no magic number to how long filler lasts since it depends on the injection area, type of filler and how quickly your body breaks down the filler.  Fillers can be FDA approved to last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on it’s crosslinking.

Which one is best for you?

If you are bothered by wrinkles in your forehead, between your eyes or your crow’s feet, Botox and Dysport will be a good procedure for you.  A neurotoxin treatment is a quick and painless procedure and will significantly improve the appearance of wrinkles while preventing new wrinkles from forming.

If your concern is lost facial volume or structure, fillers are a treatment you should consider to provide softening and optimization of your natural beauty.  Our skilled La Chele medical providers use fillers to enhance your natural features and bring volume and balance back to the face.  In the wrong hands, fillers can look unnatural and can distort the face. In highly skilled hands, fillers can greatly enhance your beauty and look undetectable.   The goal is to provide each patient with symmetry, youthfulness and a refreshed appearance.  We use all brands of fillers, except for silicone which we are against.
