In the United States, over 5 million people struggle with pigmentation concerns. When addressing these concerns, hydroquinone (HQ) has traditionally been the gold standard for treating skin discoloration; still, some individuals may prefer less controversial alternatives. La Chelé offers hydroquinone and hydroquinone-free (non-HQ) products to achieve desired results while suiting personal skin needs without worsening underlying conditions.
Hydroquinone, a lightening agent, is considered an industry standard and is best known for reducing dark spots by decreasing melanin (pigment) and encouraging the breakdown of melanin production at the cellular level. However, patients must be aware that a drug holiday – or break – must be taken every few months to avoid potential unwanted side effects. For this reason, we recommend hydroquinone over the summer months when the sun and heat can exacerbate pigment changes/melasma flare-ups. Over the colder winter months, we recommend supplementing with our range of hydroquinone-free products.
La Chelé offers two products with Hydroquinone – Melasma Emulsion and Night Bright/Night Bright Plus with the added benefit of kojic acid. Kojic acid works by blocking certain amino acids from forming within the body, allowing it to prevent the production of melanin and thus lighten discoloration. Studies have also shown that when kojic acid and hydroquinone combine, they can provide a superior depigmenting agent compared to individual use alone.
While hydroquinone has traditionally been a popular ingredient for treating skin discoloration, some individuals may prefer alternatives. We carry a few options for our patients: tranexamic acid via SkinMedica’s new Even and Correct line and Photo C & E with Ferulic acid via LaChelé’s private label. These products have gained attention for their ability to treat pigmentation concerns without needing topical breaks like hydroquinone.
Tranexamic acid – a brightening agent (which is also pregnancy safe), can be tolerated over long-term use with no harmful side effects and has become a favorite ingredient in the world of dermatology! While typically used to control bleeding, it was also discovered to interrupt melanin production, the pigment responsible for skin coloration. This property makes it a viable option for managing melasma and other forms of hyperpigmentation. Tranexamic acid can help reduce melanin in the skin, resulting in the diminished appearance of dark spots and helping even out skin tone when used topically. Its ability to inhibit melanin makes it an attractive alternative to hydroquinone with no side effects for those concerned about potential side effects. One of the most recognized products containing tranexamic acid is SkinMedica’s Even and Correct serum, offering a concentration of 9% tranexamic acid and other skin-benefiting antioxidants like lotus sprout extract and niacinamide.
Ferulic acid is another outstanding ingredient when it comes to hyperpigmentation. It is essential and helpful due to its antioxidant protection, inhibition of the enzymes required to make melanin, and anti-inflammatory properties. When incorporated into skincare formulations, ferulic acid contributes to a more comprehensive approach to treating and improving hyperpigmentation while alleviating UV-induced damage, such as sunburn and inflammation. We recommend Photo C & E with Ferulic acid from our private line, developed by Dr. Lisa Espinoza. It is safe for long-term daily use as well during pregnancy. It is formulated with a high concentration of vitamins C & E, offering a powerful defense against free radicals and environmental damage while enhancing skin’s radiance allowing a more even-toned complexion.
Lastly, regardless of skin concern or product is chosen to treat hyperpigmentation, patients should always incorporate SPF into a daily routine. We recommend our tinted BB Cream, which provides skin protection from UV rays via mineral protection and can help even out dark patches of melasma that may have already formed. Without daily use and frequent reapplication, hyperpigmentation can worsen.
Hyperpigmentation and melasma are lifelong conditions that require ongoing maintenance and treatment. While hydroquinone has long been used and proven effective, tranexamic acid and Photo C & E with Ferulic Acid offer alternative options for those seeking a different approach. Whichever product you choose, you can trust in the exceptional benefits of brightening effects and overall skin rejuvenation. By exploring and embracing these alternatives, patients can find practical solutions that help them achieve a more even and radiant complexion while prioritizing their concerns. It’s essential to consult with a skincare professional before incorporating these acids into your routine. Our Medical Providers can give guidance on proper usage and potential interactions and help determine the most suitable concentration for your specific needs, as well as other in-office treatments available for managing skin conditions.
