What is Kybella?
Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injection to improve the appearance of submental fullness, also known as a “double chin”. Kybella® utilizes a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is naturally produced by the liver and is stored within the gall bladder. It is secreted into the intestine during digestion, where it functions to break down dietary fats through a process called emulsion. When injected into unwanted submental fat or other areas of the body, Kybella® is able to destroy the membrane of fat cells, permanently dissolving them over a period of weeks to months.
How is Kybella administered and does it hurt?
Kybella is administered in a series of small injections with a very fine needle. Although the needle is very small, the procedure can be slightly uncomfortable, however, the procedure typically only takes about ten minutes. One of our experienced injectors will map out a grid of where there is fat that needs dissolving. They will then inject Kybella® utilizing this grid-like pattern throughout the neck and chin area.
Is there downtime after Kybella?
In short, yes. After injection, the area can swell and be tender for up to two weeks’ time. We recommend compression and icing to help reduce swelling and discomfort. On average, a series of 3 treatments are needed to reach cosmetic goals, however results vary from person to person. At La Chele, we will sometimes opt for a more aggressive first treatment that may eliminate the need for more. We also offer simple in-office Facetite, in which we can perform neck liposuction, with results in as little as one treatment. In the past, the most effective method to eliminate submental fat was a surgical procedure, which was expensive and required significant downtime. Kybella® has significantly decreased the need for this type of surgery, thus reducing overall downtime and recovery time, while still achieving remarkable results.
