What are PDO Threads?
Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are synthetic bio-absorbable surgical sutures that are placed under the skin to treat aging, sagging tissue. PDO sutures have been used in cardiothoracic surgery for decades and are one of the safest implantable medical devices on the market. There are two types of threads: barbed and smooth threads. Barbed threads contain tiny barbs in a 360° pattern which grip the skin and provide strong anchoring and support to facial tissue when lifting and repositioning loose skin. Smooth threads are smooth! They are best used on crepey, wrinkled skin as they help induce collagen production which will then soften the appearance of these areas.
Clinical studies have proven PDO threads improve facial laxity by lifting the tissue in an upward vector. As polydioxanone is biodegradable, your body will break down these threads over a period of 6-8 months. This will then stimulate collagen production, a process called “neo-collagenesis,” which aides in the anti-aging process for the following year.
What does the PDO thread process look like?
The PDO thread process is surprisingly easy! First, we anesthetize the area with a small amount of lidocaine. After this, a small insertion point is made (painlessly!) for the thread to be inserted. The thread is then placed and the skin gently pulled over the thread locking the lift into place. You should expect to feel some tightness in the treatment area immediately after placement, but this will loosen in the days following your treatment.

How many PDO threads will I need?
It is difficult to generalize the number of threads needed to achieve a desired aesthetic outcome as no two faces are the same. The number of threads you will need will be best determined in a complimentary consultation with one of our experienced medical providers!
How long do PDO threads last?
As polydioxanone is an absorbable material, your body will break the thread down in about 6-8 months’ time. You will then begin to produce collagen and elastin around the thread. Collagenesis will occur for up to 12 months after thread placement. For this reason, we recommend at least annual thread placement to maintain your result, patients with more mature skin may require thread placement twice per year.
Who is a good candidate for PDO threads?
PDO threads are a great treatment option for clients of all ages. Those with true skin laxity are often considered ideal thread candidates. A complimentary consultation with one of our medical providers is recommended in order to best determine if you are a good candidate for PDO threads.
When will I see results?
Results can be appreciated immediately after threads are placed! Give yourself at least two weeks to completely heal after thread placement.
What is the post op care for PDO Threads?
PDO thread placement is a low-risk, non-invasive procedure however bruising, swelling and tenderness is common afterwards. We suggest that our patients avoid manipulating the treatment area, excessive exercise, and swimming pools/jacuzzi/bath use for one week after thread treatment. Please avoid makeup for 48 hours after your treatment to ensure a clean healing environment. We also advise no dental work for two weeks. We recommend Tylenol for any discomfort.
What is the downtime for PDO Threads?
We recommend that you plan for two weeks downtime, this will give any potential bruising or swelling time to heal. Patients who undergo PDO thread placement generally heal rapidly, with most returning to their normal routine the following day.
